VISTEC Research Excellence - recognized by SIR & Nature Index Rankings

VISTEC research excellence is consistently recognized through the world-class research and innovation rankings, both Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) and Nature Index.

Why does VISTEC use these rankings?

As a small-sized, graduate and advanced research institute for Science and Technology founded in 2015 by PTT Public Company Limited, VISTEC utilizes the Scimago Institutions Rankings and Nature Index to monitor and exhibit its research quality and international impact. Both international ranking systems help VISTEC attract partnerships and funding, guide strategic development, and enhance global reputation as a leader in science and innovation.

SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR)

VISTEC – The Most Innovative University in Thailand (Year 2025)

Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) has been ranked #1 in Thailand and #127 globally in the Innovation category of the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2025—marking the fourth consecutive year that VISTEC has led the nation in this category.

About SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR)

The SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is a globally recognized evaluation system developed by SCImago Lab, a research organization based in Spain. Operating since 2009, SIR provides a comprehensive assessment of research institutions worldwide based on performance across three key dimensions:

  • Research Performance
  • Innovation Output
  • Societal Impact

To be included in this world rankings, institutions must meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum of 100 peer-reviewed publications annually indexed in Scopus
  • At least 75% of publications must receive citations in the same year

Understanding the Innovation Ranking

The Innovation category—in which VISTEC ranks #1 in Thailand—evaluates the degree to which an institution's research contributes to technological advancement. It is based on data from the PATSTAT database of the European Patent Office (EPO) and includes the following indicators:

  • Innovative Knowledge (IK): The number of scientific publications cited in patents
  • Technological Impact (TI): The proportion of research output referenced in patents
  • Patents (PT): The number of patent applications (simple families) filed

These indicators reflect how well an institution’s research translates into real-world, patentable technologies—highlighting practical impact and commercial potential.

Innovation with Impact

Though founded only a decade ago, VISTEC has proven that excellence is not limited by age or size. The institute was established with a clear mission: to focus on cutting-edge research and high-impact innovation that addresses global challenges and industry needs. This vision has enabled VISTEC to maintain its #1 national ranking in Innovation for four consecutive years, competing successfully with much larger, long-established institutions nationally and internationally.

VISTEC’s top ranking in innovation reflects our strong commitment to:

  • Research that translates into technological applications
  • Collaboration with industries and global partners
  • Developing future talent that drives knowledge-based innovation

This achievement not only highlights VISTEC’s unique position in Thailand’s higher education landscape, but also underscores our contributions to global technological advancement.

What is Nature Index?

The Nature Index is a trusted resource that tracks high-quality scientific research based on publications in a curated list of leading journals. It provides insight into the research performance of institutions, countries, and regions across four key disciplines: chemistry, life sciences, physical sciences, and Earth & environmental sciences. Using metrics such as Article Count (AC) and Fractional Count (FC) highlights contributions to globally recognized research. It also offers valuable indicators of excellence and collaboration in scientific research showcasing the impact and influence of top-performing institutions and research organizations.

Thailand’s Academic Excellence Reflected in the Nature Index

The Nature Index highlights Thailand’s growing presence in global research, revealing the country’s ability to publish high-quality work in leading journals. This recognition strengthens its international reputation. At the same time, it attracts multi-source funding, international collaborations, and outstanding researchers from all over the world.

Thailand’s contributions have also steadily increased, particularly in natural sciences such as chemistry, physics, biology, and environmental science, reflecting its rising impact in the global scientific community.

The Nature Index helps emphasize the research strength of Thai academic institutions by tracking publications in leading scientific journals. It showcases growing contributions in natural sciences like chemistry, physics, and biology. Universities such as Chulalongkorn, Mahidol, and VISTEC consistently appear, reflecting their commitment to impactful research and global visibility.

VISTEC: As a Young and Small-Sized, Big in Impact

As a young and small-sized institution, VISTEC ranks 12th among the top 30 academic institutions established since 1988 worldwide. The ranking reflects VISTEC’s impressive growth in adjusted fractional count (Adjusted FC*) from 2015 to 2017, emphasizing its rising research output and influence. Additional data includes fractional count (FC), total articles in 2017, and growth percentage, underscoring VISTEC’s strong focus on research and innovation.
